About GAPS at West Point

GAPS West Point is located on the Georgia / Alabama State line in West Point, Georgia, 81 miles south of Atlanta, and 81 miles north of Montgomery. GAPS West Point started processing the KIA Sorento in November 2009. KIA Motor Manufacturing of Georgia (commonly known as KMMG) also opened their facility in Georgia in 2009. The KMMG plant is the first KIA manufacturing facility to open in America.

When the KMMG plant opened, GAPS only processed the KIA Sorento. In 2010 KMMG began building the Hyundai Santa Fe (previously at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing of Alabama), and in 2011 KMMG began building the KIA Optima.

This facility has a union-free workforce, and is a foreign trade zone. The facility also has 24-hour security on-site, as well as camera surveillance and fencing around the entire facility for enhanced security.

Currently we have over 600 employees who operate over three shifts.

GAPS West Point is a full service processing facility that covers approximately 189 acres with processing buildings in excess of 200,000 sq feet.

Line Off

Located at the KMMG plant, this is where GAPS employees inspect vehicles for mutilation issues and apply exterior wrap to the vehicles. Daily production is 1,400 over three shifts.

Undercoat is where the cavity wax and black under coat wax is applied to the underbody and wheel wells of the vehicles. Hourly capacity is 73 vehicles.

Shuttle / Yard

Shuttle identifies allocated units for processing, takes vehicles through our fuel island / carwash building and stages the vehicles in staging areas and/or load lines.

Car Wash and Fuel Island

The cycle time at our carwash is 128 seconds. Each eligible vehicle receives a car wash to ensure that the vehicles are ready for proper vehicle inspections to have them ready for shipment.

Our PIO department handles ten different installs for the Sorento, six different installs for the Optima, and seven different installs for the Santa Fe. Currently this department works two shifts of 50 installers each capable of producing over 700 installs per shift.

Body Shop

Our paint and body shop has four Garmat paint booths and four Garmat prep stations.  Our GAPS West Point paint and body shop has more than 50+ years of combined experience on repairing new vehicles.

There are two processing lines that are each 190 feet long and can hold ten cars on each line at a time. These conveyors are used for vehicle inspections, applying the necessary labels, putting necessary materials in the glove box and accessories into the trunk area.

Our highly trained rail staff includes one certified welder, two certified locomotive operators and eight of our rail maintenance staff are Carmen certified. All loading, switching, securing of the rail cars and maintenance are done according to AAR standards.

Quality Control

Quality Control inspects and confirms processing quality according to KMA / HMA standards prior to the shipment of the vehicle.
